It may look effortless to the untrained eye, but keeping and maintaining a beard or mustache takes a lot of work. Sure, you can wait and do it all once a week when you get behind, but that can lead to awkward shaggy days as you get closer to day 7. We wanted to put together a quick 5 minute daily routine that you can get into the habit of doing so that you don’t have to wait until the last minute to do it all at once.
Rinse your entire face and beard with lukewarm water to help get rid of the overnight debris, oils, and loose hairs that can build up over time. You can do this in the shower or if you shower at night, you can do it at the sink as you’re getting ready for the day. You don’t need to shampoo your beard every day, we do recommend that you rinse it with lukewarm water at least once.
Beard oil is a fantastic way to start your daily routine off right. It helps to hydrate your skin and it serves to soften your hair in order to help reduce itchiness and flaking. Place a few drops of beard oil into your palm. The amount depends on beard length, but a good rule of thumb is two to three drops for short beards and four to six for longer growth. Rub your hands together and massage the oil into the skin under your beard first, then work it through the hair. We recommend you try our new Natty Musk Beard Oil which has an earthy, smoky, and relaxing scent profile.
Once the oil is applied, use a beard comb or brush to evenly distribute it throughout your beard. This helps prevent patchiness and ensures every strand benefits from the oil.
Combing also detangles knots and trains your beard to grow in a more uniform direction over time. Start gently, working from the ends upward to avoid unnecessary pulling.
Once your beard has been properly rinsed and moisturized, then it’s time to apply a balm for some all day protection. The balm will help give your beard a light hold to keep its shape and reduce dry patches and fly-aways.
If you just have a mustache or want to give an extra layer of style and pizazz to your look, this is a great time to apply some of our new Stache Wax. This will provide a strong hold on your beard or mustache to ensure that your look holds firm all day without feeling like glue or hairspray.
Now we’re on the final stretch! It’s time to use your beard comb and scissors to help do the finishing touches. Take your beard scissors or your electric shaver and make sure that the hair above your upper lip is trimmed away from your mouth and is straight and even. Then, use your electric shaver to shave your cheeks above your beard line and also help to keep your beard line looking sharp and uniform. Lastly, trim up the areas under your chin and neckline above your collar.
