What Do You Wash Your Beard With, and How Often?
09/30/2026

It's one of the most common questions we get, and for good reason. Washing your beard sounds simple until you realize the products and habits that work for the hair on your head can actually work against the hair on your face. Here's what you actually need to know.

Don't Use Regular Shampoo

Head hair and beard hair are not the same. Beard hair is coarser, grows in a different pattern, and sits closer to skin that's more prone to dryness and irritation. Regular shampoo is formulated to strip oil from your scalp, which is the opposite of what a beard needs. Use it daily on your beard and you'll end up with dry, brittle hair and itchy, flaky skin underneath.

Instead, reach for a gentle, beard-specific cleanser or a mild, sulfate-free soap. You want something that cleans without completely stripping the natural oils that keep your beard soft and your skin calm.

How Often Should You Actually Wash It?

For most guys, two to three times a week is the sweet spot. That's enough to clear out dirt, sweat, and the food particles that inevitably end up in there, without over-washing and drying things out.

On the days you're not doing a full wash, a quick rinse with warm water is enough to keep things fresh. If you're especially active, work outdoors, or just have an oilier beard, you might lean toward the higher end of that range. If your beard runs dry or you're in a dry climate (hello, Idaho), stick closer to twice a week.

The Step Right After Washing Matters Just as Much

Washing without a follow-up is where a lot of guys go wrong. Cleansing, even a gentle one, still pulls some moisture out of the hair and skin. If you stop there, you're left with a beard that's clean but dry, which is exactly the itchy, brittle territory you're trying to avoid.

After washing with a gentle cleanser, apply our beard balm to replenish moisture and maintain softness. Our Spruce Beard Balm is a great option here. It locks in hydration, softens coarse hair, and leaves you with a light, woodsy scent that's more outdoors than overpowering. Work a small amount through damp or dry hair, right down to the skin, and you've replaced everything the wash took out.

A Simple Routine to Follow

If you want the short version: wash two to three times a week with a gentle cleanser, rinse with warm water on the days in between, and follow every wash with balm to lock moisture back in. Skip any of those steps and you'll notice it, whether that's dryness, itchiness, or a beard that just doesn't look as full and healthy as it could.

Your beard works hard for you. A little consistency in how you wash and care for it goes a long way toward keeping it soft, healthy, and something you're proud to show off.
