Beard Balm vs Beard Oil
02/23/2022

You’ve seen them around our website. You may have even encountered them in one of the many retail stores throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Heck, you could have even tried one of them out at one of our many booth presentations around the United States. But, do you know the differences between them and how to use them? Perhaps. Perhaps not. We’re talking, of course, about our beard balms and beard oils. When do you use a balm vs an oil etc.? Before shower or bedtime? Well, you have questions and we have answers! Let’s dive into the differences and best practices for getting the most out of our beard balms and oils.

Similarities

Sometimes the best way to learn about the differences between two things is to learn what they have in common. Both the beard oil and the beard balm are handcrafted here in the USA, in Boise, Idaho to be exact. Both have a few high quality ingredients in common. Those ingredients are:

  • Castor Oil
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Lavender And Rosemary Essential Oils

The balm and the oil product have a similar foundation of three powerful and nutrient dense oils that help enrich and nourish your facial skin and (most importantly) beard hair. Vitamin E helps to repair and reduce hair breakages while the Rosemary and Lavender essential oils provide the delightful fragrance as well as other useful benefits. Lavender can help reduce skin irritation and inflammation and has a soothing scent that relaxes and calms your nerves. It can even help you sleep more restfully! Rosemary was considered sacred by many cultures, including the ancient Egyptians. Rosemary can help reduce hair stiffness and irritation and helps to actually improve circulation in the skin around the face which has many other secondary benefits. Put together and you have one powerhouse of an oil blend that is perfect for any beard.

Differences

Where they differ is in the base of the compounds themselves. To keep its more robust and hard form, the balm has certain ingredients that help it stay solid at room temperature whereas the oil is just that, an oil that is liquid at all times. Here are the differences in ingredients for our typical balms and oils.

The Balm:

  • Organic Coconut Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Beeswax

The Oil:

  • Argan Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil

When To Use And Best Practices

While their differences might not be that vast, their uses can definitely be. We recommend using the balm first thing in the morning to help give you a supercharged hydration dose to face the day while the oil is best applied at night, right before bedtime to help you sleep and to help nourish your skin and beard while in bed. Right after showering is a great time to use the balm as it can capture and recoup any lost moisture that your hair may have experienced due to shampooing. We also recommend taking a travel sized balm with you in your pocket in case you need to freshen up before a big meeting or a date.
