Beefing Up Your Hand Sanitizer Game In a Time Of Quarantine
03/31/2020

Being cooped up at home can be fun, but the threat of cabin fever is always around the corner. Looking for a good quarantine project? Look no further than making your own hand sanitizer in the comfort of your own home. You’ll just need a few simple ingredients and some time and patience and you’ll have yourself a nice little stockpile of the stuff in no time.

Upgrading Your Current Sanitizer

The CDC recommends that an effective hand sanitizer contains at least 60% alcohol, so if the bottles you have aren’t up to that standard, then it may be time to bump up the alcohol content. Simply add some high proof isopropyl alcohol to your bottles and shake to mix. You can even add a little aloe vera gel to help your hands stay more moisturized. Don’t have any isopropyl alcohol on hand? You can use everclear grain alcohol instead as long as it is over 140 proof or 70% alcohol content by volume. Keep those germs at bay while mixing a stiff cocktail to help you weather the storm.

Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer

Are your stores sold out or selling only a limited stock of hand sanitizer in your area? If you’re looking for some and can’t find it, you can always make your own! Craft your own hand sanitizer at home with a few simple ingredients: rubbing alcohol (aka isopropyl alcohol) aloe vera gel, and essential oil drops or lemon juice. Here’s a good recipe to get you started:

1 cup of 70% (or higher) alcohol solution

½ cup of aloe vera gel

10 to 12 drops of essential oil like tea tree or cinnamon or lemon juice

Pour the aloe vera gel first into a small tub or bowl. Then, using a fork or whisk, mix in the alcohol, pouring slowly. Once thoroughly combined, add in the essential oils or lemon juice. As quickly as you can, take a spatula and scrape the mixture into a bottle or other sealed container. You can empty a ketchup or mustard squeeze bottle and pour it into that (after washing thoroughly, of course).

There you have it! Homemade hand sanitizer! Of course, it is always recommended that you wash your hands with soap and water as often as possible, but if you are out and about or need a quick fix, then using hand sanitizer can be a good way to help keep your hands clean.
