Winter is… still here. The holidays are over. The grandparents have flown back to Florida or Arizona and the Christmas decorations are cozily tucked away in the garage again until next December. Now all we have is three more months of cold and snow with nothing to look forward to except for the first warm spring day. Well, with winter still in full swing, your beard and face can’t wait until the warm weather comes to get hydrated again! You must take care of it now or else you’ll be in a whole world of trouble. Don’t worry though, we got your back. Check out these winter beard and face care tips that will help you survive the rest of the winter months.
During the winter, the air is much drier than the warmer months. This is especially true if you spend most of your time indoors with central forced air heating. The warm, dry air constantly circulating around your beard and skin has a tendency to leach moisture from your body quickly. This means that you must take extra care to not expose your hair and skin to any other outside sources that may dry your skin out as well, like harsh shampoos and soaps. If you think you can just use the same harsh soap year round without any consequences to your skin, then you are sadly mistaken.
The solution? Switch up your soap and shampoos in the winter. If you’re like most guys, you’re probably using a 3 in 1 bottle that is supposed to be a shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. While that is fine for the warmer months, it is harsh and drying to your skin during the winter. Try switching up to a shampoo that specifically says it is moisturizing or for “dry skin.” That will help you keep more of your moisture where it’s supposed to be. Same goes for your body soap. Swap out your soaps and you will see a difference very quickly!
Aside from a good shampoo, you should upgrade your conditioner game as well. Get a good brand that specifically addresses dry hair and skin. Feel free to condition twice each shower as well. You can’t go wrong with that, especially in the winter.
Be careful with your beard after you shower. Don’t take a shortcut and blow dry your beard during the winter if you absolutely can help it. Blow drying can dry out and worsen your dry skin. Take a dry towel and lightly pat your beard dry after each shower instead.
While we typically recommend using beard balm and beard oil once a day each, it might be a good idea to step up either one or both during the winter months if you notice that your skin is getting dry and flaky or that your beard hair is feeling damaged or coarse and dry. Use your balm first thing each morning and give your beard a good combing, then use your oil after you shower. As a third application, try bringing one of our handy travel sized balm canisters with you, they store easily in your pocket and use it between lunch and dinner for an extra moisture boost.
No matter what you do for your self care and beard care resolutions this year, we hope you have a wonderful 2022 from Better Man Beard.
