Better Man Beard's Top Beard Grooming Tips
03/19/2018

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the beard is the landscaping out front. A man’s beard says more about him than even his clothes do. This is why we not only have to make sure it looks good, but that it is healthy too.

We’ll explore the best ways in which you can keep your beard growing strong and Instagram ready, just like you.

Give it Space

Beards need some breathing room at first. When first attempting an epic beard, allow about six weeks of pure growth time after your last clean shave. This will help you and your beard barber, (you have one, don’t you?) know exactly how evenly or unevenly your hair grows in and informs how the final styling will go.

While letting your beard grow out this first time, we recommend wearing plenty of flannel shirts to complete your mountain man look. And, if that’s what you were going for, then bravo: Mission accomplished! If you’d like a more modern and sculpted look, then keep reading the rest of the tips below.

Get Your Tools Ready

Like any good project, a perfect beard requires tools. While you are in your initial six week growth phase, pick up some quality beard tools. Don’t go cheap here, you’ll regret it! Think of your beard as an extension of your wardrobe and budget accordingly. You’ll need the following tools to get you started:

  1. Beard comb. A must have for keeping your beard even and flyaways under control. Here is our specialized comb made of fresh sandalwood.
  2. Mustache trimming scissors. No, don’t reach for the junk drawer when it comes to beard scissors. A good pair of barber’s scissors will keep your beard edges crisp and your mustache off your food.
  3. Shaving razor. Just because you are growing a beard doesn’t mean you have to stop shaving. A good beard needs to have clean lines around your neck and cheekbones. Don’t throw your razor away just yet.
  4. Electric trimmers. Braun brand is of good quality and a great addition to your grooming arsenal. Don’t forget to clean this regularly too or it could lead to breakouts.

Consult a Barber

We get it. No one likes to ask for help. A man could go it alone when it comes to his perfect beard style, but let us tell you, that will not end well. Toward the end of your grow out phase, consult a local barber whom you trust with your beard and ask them to help shape it in the the epic masterpiece it can be.

Have them match your beard to your personal style, tastes, and shape of your face. A bad beard is a quick way to ruin an otherwise good face. No one wants that. Don’t tough this one out! Get some help on this one.

Trim on The Regular

Between monthly visits to your beard barber, you’ll need to keep your beard under control. Use your mustache trimmers weekly to keep your whiskers in check and regularly check for hair growth around your neck and below your jawline. If it grows real thick around there, you may need to edge that back a few times a month. Every sunday morning after a shower, take a good long look at your beard perimeter and make sure it is clean and trimmed. Afterwards, use your beard comb to create the perfect shape for your beard in order to face the rest of the week in confidence.

Definitely DO Feed After Midnight

Don’t worry, your beard is not a gremlin. You can feed it anytime you want. We recommend using a high quality beard balm every day. This will make sure that your face is disinfected and your beard hair continues to grow thick and strong. Your face can really dry out as well when growing a beard.

Regular daily beard oil and balm applications can keep beard dandruff and dry skin out of your life. Our Better Man Beard Balm is antibacterial and naturally scented with lavender and rosemary essential oils that will keep you smelling fresh and clean for your significant other.

Diet Right

Your beard takes lots of natural nutrients to grow properly and to its full potential. Keep your body fed with lots of healthy proteins, fats, and leafy greens in order to keep your hair follicles healthy and strong. Don’t skip the multivitamin!

Wash Regularly

We know you’re busy, but if you take time to clean your beard with a good shampoo and conditioner in the shower and a good beard balm after the shower, then your beard and by extension, your face, will look healthy and clean. You really don’t get a second chance at a first impression. Having a clean and healthy beard can ensure that your first impression is the best.

Having a beard is a big responsibility, but it comes with even bigger rewards. It’s a chance to show the world your personality and style, but we must work hard to keep all these things in the balance. You owe it to yourself. Take care of your beard and it will take care of you.
