Common Beard Care Mistakes (And How to Fix Them Naturally)
04/23/2025

If you’ve had a beard for any length of time, you know full well that even the most basic beard styling takes lots of care, consistency, and the right tools for the job. Unfortunately, many guys make a few common mistakes that can leave their beards feeling itchy, growing awkward patches, or even just plain unruly. The good news is that these can be fixed easily with just a little bit of elbow grease and some know-how. Using natural products and developing some smart grooming habits can help put a stop to all of those common beard grooming issues. Let’s explore them together in today’s blog! Of course, if you have any of your own tips or experiences, please share them with us.

Mistake #1: Washing Your Beard With Your Regular Hair Shampoo OR Not Washing Your Beard At All

A lot of guys assume that if their regular shampoo is good enough for their top of head hair, then it must be ok for your beard? Wrong! Unfortunately, most commercial hair shampoos are very harsh on beards and end up stripping away valuable oils and moisture that your beard and face needs to stay moisturized and healthy. Or, many guys will just skip washing their beard altogether. Both are not optimal!

Remedy: We recommend using a gentle beard-specific shampoo or save some money by making your own at home with some simple ingredients you may have on hand. Here’s the recipe below:

Invigorating Beard Wash/Shampoo

1/4 cup Liquid Castile Soap.

1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel.

Optional fragrances:

10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil.

5 drops Tea Tree Oil.

5 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil.

Mistake #2: Not Moisturizing the Skin Underneath

If you’ve noticed that your face becomes dry, itchy, and flakey under your beard, then you may be neglecting the skin beneath the beard.

Remedy: Use extra beard oil when doing your daily routine and add another quick touch up during the day, especially if you plan on being outside for any extended period of time. Alternatively, you can also purchase a face-specific lotion to apply once daily at night or in the morning.

Mistake #3: Over-Trimming or Uneven Trimming

Don’t hack away at your beard with just any old scissors you may have on hand. Using the right tools for the job will help keep your beard looking and feeling its best.

Remedy:

  • Use sharp, quality trimming tools — never dull scissors.
  • Trim when your beard is dry (wet hair appears longer).
  • Comb it out before trimming to see the natural shape.
  • When in doubt, visit a barber to get a professional baseline shape.
