Should You Comb Before Or After Using Beard Oil?
11/13/2025

William Shakespeare said it best when he penned “To comb, or not to comb? That is the question.” Since 1599, people have been wondering about whether it is best to comb your beard before or after applying beard oil. Well, all joking aside, we are going to tackle that question and maybe a little more so that the Bard can rest easy knowing whether combing is the best course of action or not! And if you have any questions or beard grooming stories or tips, we’d love to hear from you in the comments! Don’t be afraid to shout them from the rooftops like the town cryer from days passed, or just type it out with your keyboard, whichever’s easiest.

Does It Really Matter? Yes! Order Matters

In the grand scheme of things, sure, you can probably do just fine with applying the beard oil in whatever order you’d like, but if you really want to get the best, healthiest and most kissable beard out there, then you should really do things in the right order.

The truth is that both steps matter, but the order you follow can make a noticeable difference in how your beard looks and feels.

Comb First Or Oil First? Which Is It?

Ok, I think it’s time to let the cat out of the bag. We recommend applying the oil first, and then the comb. For best results, we suggest that you apply Better Man Beard Original Beard Oil first to moisturize and soften the beard, then use the sandalwood comb to evenly distribute the oil and detangle the beard.

Why Does It Matter?

Applying the oil first helps with a few things. First, it allows the oil to instantly get to work de-tangling your hairs and lubricating the hair surfaces so that as you then start to comb, you will have fewer snags and less chance of breaking or tearing your hairs should they be tangled or have split ends.

Combing after applying oil also helps to distribute it evenly throughout your beard making sure that you get a nice, even coat. This helps reduce patches, tangles, and clumps from a dry-comb session. Combing the oil into your beard helps to enhance its natural shine and softness. This also helps to train your beard to flow and set in a single direction which will allow it more space to grow in an even and orderly manner.

Now that you finally have the answer to that age-old question, you can go out and party like it’s 1599!
