Tips For Keeping Your Beard Moisturized And Preventing Beard Dandruff, Especially In The Colder Months
01/31/2024

It doesn’t look like it from the outside, but growing and maintaining a beard requires a lot of upkeep if you want to do it properly. Between the constant need to trim stray hairs, shave around the edges, comb out the tangles, and many other things, you are left with an amount of upkeep that is surprising to most. On top of all that, and especially during the winter months, your facial skin underneath the beard needs constant attention as well in order to prevent unsightly and sometimes painful skin irritation, dandruff, and flakes. In today’s article, we’re going to cover some best practices for keeping that facial skin clear, moisturized, and flake free all year round.

The Causes Of Dry, Flakey Facial Skin

Part of being able to combat the onset of dry beard skin is to understand how it comes about in the first place. There are actually quite a few factors that contribute to beard dandruff. Here are a few of them so that you can better understand how to either avoid them or to use other means to combat dryness.

  • Extreme temperatures either hot or cold weather
    • Especially during the colder months, the air is dry and it can leach moisture from your beard hair and skin. During these cold times, you are more likely to crank up the thermostat which causes you to then be exposed to lots of warm air which also dries out your face. Double whammy!
  • Hard water
    • That’s right! If you have hard water, your beard hair is more likely to be stripped of its oils and moisturizing agents along with your facial skin. When you get out of the shower, the hard water on your face will dry and leave behind harsh mineral deposits which can dry out your face even more
  • Harsh soaps
    • Using harsh soaps on your face and beard (like bar hand soaps and harsh shampoos) can dry out your skin and hair like nobody’s business! Avoid these at all costs.

How To Keep Your Beard And Face Moisturized

Now that you know what to avoid, here are a few things that you can do in order to both combat those above dry skin triggers and repair damage that has already been done.

  • Use beard formulated soaps designed to keep moisture in
  • Completely dry your beard after the shower to avoid hard water deposits and buildups
  • Use beard moisturizing products daily or several times a day like a good beard oil right after a shower (or just as needed throughout the day) and a beard balm in the morning
  • During each shower, use a beard friendly and moisturizing conditioner at least once
