04/10/2025

Whether you’re growing out your first beard or you’ve been rocking facial hair for years, one thing is certain: your skin type matters when it comes to your grooming routine. Using the wrong kind of product (even if it’s a great product) can lead to dryness, irritation, breakouts, or an unruly beard. In today’s blog, we’ll walk you through how to build the perfect beard care routine tailored to your skin’s specific needs. Give us a shout out in the comments or on social with your own life pro tips for beard care!

What Skin Type Do You Have? Starting Steps

The first thing you have to do before settling on the beard care routine that is best for you is to determine your face’s skin type. Knowing your skin type is key to selecting the right products that balance hydration, control oil, and soothe irritation. Here are some skin types and their attributes that can help you identify the one closest to yours.

  • Oily Skin: Your face tends to get shiny or greasy throughout the day. You may be prone to clogged pores and beard acne.
  • Dry Skin: Your skin often feels tight, itchy, or flaky — especially under your beard.
  • Combination Skin: Some areas (like your nose or chin) are oily, while others (like your cheeks) are dry.

Customizing Your Beard Care Routine To Your Skin Type

  • For Oily Skin
    • For those with oily skin, it is best to stick with a beard oil rather than an oil and a balm. We recommend our original oil which has a perfect set of ingredients that will help care for your oily skin without clogging pores: Argan oil, Jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.
    • Stick to a cleansing routine 4–5 times per week to prevent buildup
    • Brush daily with a wooden comb
  • For Dry Skin
    • Choose a nourishing oil like argan, jojoba, vitamin E which are all in our fantastic Spruce oil blend.
    • Consider a leave-in beard balm rich in shea butter or beeswax, both of which are in our Spruce balm as well!
    • Limit washing to 2–3 times per week and always follow up with oil.
  • For Combination Skin:
    • Use a mid-weight oil and apply more generously in dry areas.
    • A light balm can help lock in moisture on drier parts of the face.
    • Wash as needed — but avoid overdoing it.
